Calm Mantra Meditation

I am now a month into my Kundalini yoga training and I have developed a 1 hour practice per day – I have had to pick a krya to focus on everyday for 40 days. Each krya is designed to bring harmony and balance to different aspects of our mind, body and spirit by using breath, mantra, chanting and movement. As I write this I am half way through and I am finding the repetition and discipline of the practice to be very beneficial.

One of the reasons I am finding huge benefits is due to the chanting and mantras which use the repetition of Sanskrit words. Sanskrit is an ancient language and it’s words are made up of vowels and constants where the emphasis is on the vibration rather than the meaning. A lot of the words have the mmmmmmm sound (the sound we often make when we are humming). What is really interesting is how science research has shown how humming increases nitric oxide 15 fold and nitric oxide is a neurotransmitter which is fundamental to your overall health and wellbeing. Humming also activates the parasympathetic nervous system which allow the systems of the body to calm.

For this reason, I have put together a mantra meditation using the word CALM. We all have the ability to feel calmness as an emotion but it would be easy to feel we have lost it with all the stresses of this year. The word Calm uses the mmmmm sound and so we can reap the benefits this will bring to our body and mind, whilst also reconnecting with an important part of ourselves.
