Why I do what I do…
In 1999, at the age of 26, I was diagnosed with M.E. Hearing that I might live with a chronic condition for the rest of my life was devastating. Alongside the physical symptoms came severe anxiety and depression — I felt like a shell of my former self, as though my inner light had been switched off.
And yet, somewhere inside, a small spark of determination remained. I wanted to find my way back to wellness.
I explored a range of complementary therapies and found both the treatments and the support of the therapists invaluable. I turned to self‑help books too, and it was while reading about Buddhism that I discovered mantra meditation.
The practice resonated immediately. I chose three personal mantras — Happy, Healthy, Strong. Some days meditation felt effortless, other days challenging, but gradually I noticed real change: improved concentration and focus, better sleep, and I felt much more able to manage my symptoms.
Discovering Yoga and Reiki added another layer of healing. Together with my meditation practice, they helped me reconnect with myself and gently switch those inner lights back on as I became Happy, Healthy and Strong.
I decided to put my own life experiences to positive use and help those navigating a difficult time. In 2003, after extensive training, I changed careers and founded my holistic therapy business. Over the years, it has been a privilege to support many individuals in finding more sustainable ways to cope with the stresses of life.
As my work evolved, I realised I could empower others to do the same. I developed a full‑time training business dedicated to personal and professional development — work that continues to feel meaningful every single day.
Drawing on everything I learned on my journey from illness to wellness, I became the award‑winning author of Making Friends with Yourself: A Practical Guide on How Meditation Can Take You From Overwhelm to an Inner Calm. The book explores challenges such as anxiety, worry, anger, the inner critic and rejection, while guiding readers through different types of meditation, the proven physiological benefits, and the foundations needed to navigate everyday life with greater ease.
I am also the co‑owner of the British School of Meditation, where I help train and support individuals who wish to become externally accredited meditation teachers. Being part of an organisation committed to high standards, compassion, and accessible teaching is one of the great joys of my work.
